ACTINIC KERATOSIS

Actinic keratosis, often referred to as AK or solar keratosis is a common skin condition characterized by rough, scaly patches or lesions on the skin's surface. It’s caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. It is considered pre-cancerous and immediate skin cancer screening is essential to prevent skin cancer.

CAUSES OF ACTINIC KERATOSIS

UV radiation exposure for prolonged periods along with tanning beds are causes of AK

Fair skin individuals are more susceptible to AK risk

Older adults are more susceptible to AK risk

SYMPTOMS

  • Appears as small, rough, scaly, or crusty patches on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face, ears, scalp, neck, chest, backs of hands, forearms, or lips
  • AK patches can vary in color from flesh-toned to reddish-brown and often feel dry
  • AK lesions are usually painless, but they can become tender or itchy.

TREATMENTS

Topical medications, cryotherapy, electrodessication, laser therapy, and chemical peels may be included in the treatment plan.
