HEAD LICE

HEAD LICE

Head lice, or pediculosis capitis, is a common infestation of the scalp and hair caused by tiny parasitic insects known as lice. It primarily affects children and teens but can occur in individuals of all ages. While head lice are not considered a serious medical condition, they can be highly contagious and cause discomfort and itching of the scalp.

CAUSES OF HEAD LICE

Direct head-to-head contact can spread lice from an infected person

Sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, or bedding with an infected person

Schools and childcare centers that often have proximity can facilitate the spread of lice

SYMPTOMS

Itching is the most common symptom of head lice found in the scalp, neck, and ears and is caused by an allergic reaction to lice bites

Visible lice and nits are tiny, about the size of a sesame seed, and may be visible crawling on the scalp

Nits, or lice eggs are oval and attached to hair shafts near the scalp

Skin sensitivity

TREATMENTS

Topical lice treatments, manual removal of lice, prescription medication, and patient education can be part of the treatment plan. A dermatologist is crucial for a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
